KTH

Highlights description

Since its founding in 1827, KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm has grown to become one of Europe’s leading technical and engineering universities. We are Sweden’s largest technical research and learning institution dedicated to advancing knowledge. At KTH, the division of Electric Power and Energy Systems’ research covers all aspects of the electric power systems including electricity markets, power generation, transmission and distribution, automation and
control as well as electric transportation, electric machines and power electronics. KTH has for many decades been involved in R&D of high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) power transmission, in particular early research of modular multilevel converter topologies which todaydominate the field. KTH has in later years been focusing on HVDC grids, including aspects of topologies, protection, control and interoperability. KTH has recently spearheaded activities towards using open-source software for the control and protection systems of HVDC converters including a CIGRE workgroup (WG B4.85). KTH staff has been coordinating the workgroup, which also comprises representatives from leading TSOs and other HVDC users, as well as equipment manufacturers.
