The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) is a renowned research and educational institution located in Karlsruhe, Germany. Established in 2009 through the merger of the University of Karlsruhe (Universität Karlsruhe) and the Karlsruhe Research Center (Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe), KIT is known for its strong emphasis on interdisciplinary research and innovation.

The Institute of Electric Energy Systems and High-Voltage Technology is an institute within the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology at the KIT.

The research focus is on the modelling, optimization, and control of modern, intelligent distribution and transmission grids, as well as the calculation and optimization of their assets.

The IEH investigates various approaches to the redesign of the energy supply system (also known as the “Energiewende”) for both the electrical transmission and distribution grid.

One area of research is the systemic examination of components, such as the operation of HVDC networks under normal conditions and in case of faults, the design and sizing of DC power switches based on power semiconductors, and methods for providing instantaneous reserve based on storage systems connected to the grid via power electronics. Another area of focus is network modelling and optimization of network operation. Network modelling involves the operation of HVDC networks and the investigation of the interaction between a DC network and the underlying AC network. In the distribution network sector, a project is currently investigating to what extent minimal energy consumption from the overarching network is achievable and developing the necessary control and management procedures. Additionally, scenarios for electromobility and the expansion of local storage in connection with existing PV installations are examined using distribution network models. Modelling and testing of components of electrical energy engineering, such as power cables and power transformers, as a basis for optimized design or for the condition diagnosis of network operating resources, complete the profile of the IEH.
