TUBS - ELENIA

Highlights description

The Technische Universität Braunschweig is a member of TU9, making it one of the top 9 universities in Germany in the engineering disciplines. With around 20,000 students, six faculties and 3,800 employees, the Technische Universität Braunschweig is one of the leading technical universities in Germany. It stands for strategic and performance-oriented thinking and action, relevant research, committed teaching and the successful transfer of knowledge and technologies to industry and society. The campus is located in the middle of one of Europe’s research hotspots with established working relationships – both with the more than 20 research institutions in the neighborhood and with international partner universities. The excellence in research is reflected, among others, in different clusters of excellence.

Research at the elenia Institute focuses on the technological and economic challenges of electrical energy supply in the 21st century and has a long tradition, particularly in high-voltage and energy system research. With this background, the elenia Institute offers a wide range of benefits for the Inter-oPEn project, from modern laboratories, real-time systems, operational experience with DC grids gained e.g. through industrial research projects.

As part of the Inter-oPEn project, the elenia Institute develops protection systems for HVDC multi-terminal grids with connected offshore wind farms using Model-Based Systems Engineering. The work considers a range of requirements from technical feasibility of control and protection algorithms, technological readiness of components, IP constraints, legal frameworks and economic factors that are important to society. Thereby, this project aims to bring together existing research results in different areas and to act as a link between different work packages.
